Diabetes Patients' Other Option: Insulin That Can Be Inhaled

For diabetes patients who depend on insulin shots, the daily injections can be challenging. Seniors may bruise from the shots, and for kids, the shots can be frightening.Doctors now have a new option, that's less painful. "I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 12 years old, seventh grade," said Tom Rudnicki.For nearly 30 years, Rudnicki's daily routine involved insulin shots that he would take three times a day. "With a shot, insulin needs to be refrigerated. So, I always had to carry a lunch box with ice. Tote that around no matter where you went," said Rudnicki.The inconvenience pushed Rudnicki to look at other options, such as an inhaler.Exubera is an inhaled insulin that's being tested on people with Type I diabetes(more...)
